Description
1998 a 2005).
ouvrages a vocation defensive, cultuelle, economique, residentielle etc.
This monograph
presents an overview of eight archaeological sites in the eastern part
of the historical province of Ayrarat - corresponding to the
administrative regions of Shirak and Aragatzotn in the current Republic
of Armenia - areas which have had limited coverage in the literature.
The history of these marchlands - continually places of conflicting
interests - has been dominated by the flourishing city of Ani, now
situated in Turkey. Since the latter part of the 19th century, Ani has
attracted the interest of scholars. The French archaeological mission
(from 1998 to 2005), whose findings are presented in this work, focuses
upon the monumental heritage of this important capital city. It also
covers the eastern bank of the Akhourian-Arpachay River, which marks the
modern border between Turkey and Armenia. Over the course of seven
years, the project has studied various sites of defensive, religious,
economic, and residential interest. Mainly active from the 10th to the
14th centuries, nevertheless, the vestiges of monuments from the period
before the Arab conquest in the 7th century are also to be found. These
have come down to us in spite of transformations occurring during a no
less troubling modern period. For each site, the study is based upon
heretofore unpublished reports, accompanied by soundings of the
stratigraphy of the soil, a reexamination of the literary sources and
the surviving epigraphy, as well as a consultation of the archives.
