Description
This substantial revision of the widely used introductory textbook of physical chemistry has been designed to broaden its appeal, particularly to students with an interest in biological applications. Now divided into 20 shorter chapters, the book is highly flexible and accessible to a wide range of students. The text has numerous worked examples, each accompanied by a self-test, many shorter illustrations of how to use a formula, and is extensively illustrated throughout. A unique feature of the text is the way that the mathematical derivations are embedded in the text as highlighted boxes : all the calculus in the text is confined to these boxes, which are designed to be unobtrusive yet available and present to motivate the student to deploy quantitative arguments. Another new feature is the presence of boxes emphasizing biological applications. The number of end-of-chapter exercises has been almost doubled, and additional exercises are included in the boxes. The website for the book includes illustrations in full colour and a 'living graphs' feature that allows the user to explore interactively how the graphs appearing in the text change as parameters are changed.
