Although not a history of the country, this book about Ireland and the Irish covers the past extensively, and although not political it covers both the North and the South, "the troubles" and their background. It looks at the people, their defining national character and personality, Ireland's relationship to Europe, Britain and the US as well as providing an examination of the arts and literature of the country.
