Like the author's previous books on France, this book on West Germany is a study of society and of regional, economic and cultural matters. It deals with the regional patchwork of the country, the causes and consequences of the "economic miracle", the issue of the Turkish "guestworker", the arts and a chapter on East German-style communism and the relationship between the two states.
