Description
In the wake of the volume on the sculpture collection of Chatsworth, this book presents another major collection of antiquities in a private English country house. The photographic documentation at Holkham Hall was undertaken during the 1970s.
The catalogue of the pieces, all but two of Roman date is organised according to type; the ideal statuary, heads of divinities and casts are presented in the historical sequence of their generally acknowledged Greek archetypes, while the other marbles and mosaics are arranged in roughly chronological order. The pieces whose archetypes cannot be dated closely, follow those which could be more accurately placed. In certain cases a desire for iconographic unity in presentation over-rode precise chronological sequence.
