Cossyra II.

Auf der etwa mittig zwischen Sizilien und Tunesien gelegenen italienischen Vulkaninsel Pantelleria wurden von 2003-2008 von den Universitäten Tübingen und der Basilicata [Matera] weiträumige Surveys im Gebiet der im Nordwesten der Insel gelegenen antiken Siedlung von Cossyra, heute S. Marco, durchgeführt. Diese lieferten zu ihrer Ausdehnung sowie zu ihrem Verhältnis zu Nekropole und Hafen wichtige neue Erkenntnisse, die hiermit ausführlich vorgelegt werden. Die umfangreiche Studie gliedert sich in zwei Teile, einerseits zu den archäologischen Befunden des mittleren 8. Jhs. v.Chr. bis zum Ende der römischen Siedlung um 533 n.Chr. einschließlich eines Kataloges der Fundstellen und einer Landschaftsgeschichte bis zur Gegenwart sowie andererseits zu den von unterschiedlichen Autoren bearbeiteten Kleinfunden. Dabei handelt es sich um Feinkeramik, Amphoren, Tonlampen, Unguentarien, Maltesische Keramik, importierte und lokale Gebrauchskeramik, mittelalterliche Keramik, Webgewichte und Netzsenker, Koroplastik und Kohlebecken sowie Steingeräte. Das Buch schließt mit den antiken Quellen und einer Bibliographie.

From 2003-8, the universities of Tübingen and the Basilicata Region [Matera] conducted a large-scale fieldwalking program in the area of the antique settlement of Cossyra, present-day S. Marco, on the Italian volcanic island of Pantelleria midway between the coasts of Sicily and Tunesia. These produced important new insights into the extension of the settlement and its relationship with the necropolis and the harbour which are now presented in detail. The voluminous study is divided into two parts, one of them dealing with the archaeological features of the mid-8th century B.C. to the end of the Roman settlement around A.D. 533 including a catalogue of find sites and a landscape history to the present day, the other one with the different genres of small finds treated by different authors. Amongst them are fine pottery wares, amphorae, pottery lamps, unguentaria, Maltese pottery, imported and local coarse pottery wares, Medieval pottery, loom weights and net sinkers, coroplast sculpture and braziers as well as lithic implements. The book ends with a compilation of antique written sources and a bibliography.
