The extended-matching question (EMQ) is now a widely adopted format for the assessment of medical students. Each question addresses a theme that may be a symptom, sign, investigation, diagnosis or a management decision, and the stems are clinical vignettes relevant to clerkship and application of knowledge to clinical practice. With each question there is an option list from which the reader chooses the most likely or the correct answer.
