Das Konzept
Die Königin der Instrumente trifft den König der Saxophone: Die Orgel trifft das Saxophon! Harduin Boeven und das Quintessence Saxophone Quintet legen mit diesem Projekt ein einmaliges Klangzeugnis ab, das es so in der musikalischen Weltgeschichte wohl noch nicht gegeben hat. Wie ist es dazu gekommen?
Uns wurde nach Kirchenkonzerten oft unterstellt, unser Quintett klinge zeitweilig wie eine Orgel. Das verstehen wir als großes Lob, weil wir eine möglichst große klangliche Vielfalt mit nicht mehr als unseren fünf Saxophonen anstreben. Im Jahr 2006 lud uns der Organist an St. Nikolai in Lippstadt, Harduin Boeven, erstmalig zu einem Konzert in seine Kirche ein. Er meinte, wir könnten einige Stücke zusammen versuchen, er habe dafür ein besonders geeignetes Instrument. Dieses entpuppte sich als digitale (!) Kirchenorgel. Der Kenner und Purist wird die Nase rümpfen, wir zunächst auch. Als wir diese Orgel allerdings zum ersten Mal gehört hatten, wich die Skepsis der Euphorie. Ein grandioser Spieltisch leitet Klänge an neun Lautsprecher hinter dem Hochaltar und die erzeugen einen Klang, der seinesgleichen sucht. Unendliche Registerkombinationen, sehr feine Anpassung an die Intonation, die Spiel- und Phrasierungstechniken der Orgel und Saxophone garantieren für alle Beteiligten ein unvergessliches Erlebnis. Zudem steht der Spieltisch mit Harduin Boeven quasi als "sechster Mann" im direkten räumlichen Bezug. Und das Publikum kann den Organisten spielen sehen! Dies sind Bedingungen, die nur mit diesem Instrument möglich sind.
Im Jahr 2007 folgte das zweite Konzert in dieser Konstellation und das Publikum war derart begeistert, dass wir uns zu dieser CD-Produktion entschlossen haben.
Am 5. September 2008 kam es dann zu unserem dritten gemeinsamen Konzert, das auf dieser CD festgehalten ist.
Die meisten Stücke sind eigens für diese Verbindung entstanden. Beim "Vivaldi-Exkurs" ergänzt Harduin Boeven den Saxophon-Part durch klangmalerische, ihm eigene Improvisationen.
Inzwischen gehen wir in dieser Sechser-Besetzung auch auf Tournee, denn diese Kirchenorgel ist transportabel!
In der Hoffnung, dass viele Hörer diese Verbindung ebenso organisch empfinden wie wir, wünschen wir ein überbordendes Musikerlebnis. Wir haben es hinter uns, sie vor sich!

The idea
The queen of instruments meets the king of jazz: The organ meets the saxophone! With this project Harduin Boeven and the Quintessence Saxophone Quintet give a testimony of sound which has never occurred this way in musical history. How could this come about?
In discussions after church concerts our Quintet was alleged to sporadically sound like an organ. We regard this as great praise because by means of using nothing more but our saxophones we strive for as much melodious diversity as possible. In 2006 the organist of St. Nikolai in Lippstadt, Harduin Boeven, invited us to perform in his church for the first time. He suggested that we try to play some pieces of music together since he has a particularly appropriate instrument. This instrument emerged as a digital (!) church organ. The expert and purist would perhaps wrinkle his nose, in the first instance we nearly did too. But when we listened to the organ for the first time scepticism gave way to euphoria. A terrific organ console passes sounds on to nine loudspeakers behind the high altar and these generate a sound which is hard to differentiate from a real organ. Infinite combinations of stops, a smooth adjustment to the intonation, the execution of playing and phrasing of organ and saxophone guarantee a memorable experience for the participants. Furthermore, the organ console with Harduin Boeven behind it has a direct spatial relation as "the sixth man". The audience can also enjoy watching the organist play! This is only made possible by the use of this instrument.
In 2007 we gave a second concert in this constellation and the audience was thrilled in such a way that we decided to produce this CD.
On the 5th September 2008 we performed together for the third time and this concert has now been recorded on CD.
Most of the musical pieces have been especially arranged for this constellation. During the "Vivaldi excursion" Harduin Boeven is supplementing the part of the saxophone by means of his characteristic and onomatopoeic improvisations.
By now our ensemble of six should be going on tour since the organ is mobile.
In the hope that many listeners regard this connection as organic as we do, we wish you an exuberant musical experience. We have been through it, you have it ahead of you.

Und deswegen gilt das QSQ inzwischen weltweit als eines der führenden Crossover-Ensembles.
Die fünf Saxophonisten sind Meister der modernen Bearbeitung klassischer und barocker Großwerke. Voller Respekt, aber ohne Scheu haucht das QUINTESSENCE SAXOPHONE QUINTET alten Meistern neues Leben ein. Die Herkunft der Musiker liegt in der Klassik und im Jazz: das verleiht ihnen besondere Fähigkeiten und das hört man in jeder Sekunde: Gleich waghalsigen Artisten gehen sie bei jeder Note höchstes Risiko, das Netz gibt es nur im Kopf. Harduin Boeven studierte Kirchenmusik, Musikpädagogik und Orgel an der Musikhochschule in Köln und schloss seine künstlerische Instrumentalausbildung nach einem Aufbaustudium an der Musikhochschule FRANZ LISTZ in Weimar als Konzertorganist ab.
Seit 1999 wirkt Harduin Boeven als Kirchenmusiker an St. Nicolai in Lippstadt und baute dort die Konzertreihe "Musik in St. Nicolai" auf.
Neben seiner Tätigkeit als Kantor widmet er sich insbesondere der Arbeit mit Chören und Sängern und leitet als Dirigent regelmäßig konzertante Aufführungen von Messen und Oratorien mit bekannten Künstlern.
Als Konzertorganist gestaltet Harduin Boeven Konzerte u.a. im Erfurter Dom, Ulmer Münster, Kölner Dom und Paderborner Dom.
The Quintessence Saxophone Quintet is unique. All notes are memorised, the saxophone is in "touch" permanently, always moving. The
Quintessence Saxophone Quintet have their own distinctive sound, which combines elements of a string quartet, a big band and a symphony orchestra. They use "open" mouthpieces, through which all facets of imaginable sounds seek and eventually find a way to the hearing channel. And this is why the Quintessence Saxophone Quintet is by now considered to be one of the leading crossover ensembles.
The five saxophonists are masters of the modern adaptation of large-scale classic and baroque works. The Quintessence Saxophone Quintet breathes new life into old masters respectfully but without timidity. Classical music and jazz are the musicians' source: This fact supplies them with special abilities and this can be heard during every single second: they take the highest risk with every note like venturesome artists; the borders only exist in the mind. And yet everything sounds as if the highly complex arrangements, which, by the way, have been composed specifically for this ensemble, would be quite easy. And it goes without saying that classical articulation goes together with jazz phrasing, that interpretation goes together with improvisation. Since the formation in November 1993 the Quintessence Saxophone Quintet is present on the great stages of the world and makes appearances at the renown festivals of the world.
Harduin Boeven studied church music, musical education and organ at the university of music in Cologne. He completed his artistic instrumental education as a concert organist at the university of music FRANZ LIST in Weimar.
