Chapter 1 - The Swirl System

After the great Galaxian Star Wars, the Universal Space Command was formed. All the known and charted Universe was under its' Charter. The USC (as we will refer to it) gathered representatives of all the known Species to determine where each Species would choose to live. Most Species chose to live on the planets of their Origins.but not all.

Planets that had one or more Species had to agree to get along on that Planet at all costs. There were many habitable Planets to choose from, and the USC could take formerly uninhabitable Planets and make them habitable. Species representatives went back and informed their peoples of the options. After much fan-fare it was all worked out and all Species agreed to do their best to conform to the terms of the USC Charter.

This story is about a group of Species living in the Andromeda Galaxy in a Star System called the Swirl. Now the Swirl is a system of 7 Planets that revolve around the exit end of a Vaccuum Corridor.. that's right, the exit end of a Vaccuum Corridor. The exit end of a Vaccuum Corridor works like a Volcano, it spews things out, Asteroids, Hot Solar Winds, Plasma storms, molecular gases, pieces of Space ships and in fact, whole ships for that matter. The origin of the Hole (or where the entry is), is not known, but this is a very Volatile system. Planets belonging to the Swirl are: Maltos w/no moon- Centaury w/2moons - Cowbeta w/no Moon and Savinia w/1moon. These planets are on a lower orbit than the next three, which are in an upper region of the system about 25 light years up from the 4 planets we just discussed and in some cases up to 60 light years away, these Planets are: Kronik w/ no Moon (which is outside the Swirl) - Azul w/1moon and Lappis w/no Moon (Lappis is the smallest Planet). The Species living on these planets are the Maltans on Maltos, the Centaurions on Centaury, the Cowbetans on Cowbeta, the Savine on Savinia, the Kronies on Kronik (and a mix of other Species we'll discuss at a later time), the Azulies on Azul and the Lappidians on Lappis. These planets revolve around an Exit hole that is close to a Medium Stationary Star that is their Sun. The Sun is slightly below the Planets and many light years away, but its' heat reaches all the Planets as their orbits dip down and face and the Sun directly for approximately 3 months of a 12 month cycle. When the Planets in the lower orbit are furthest away from the Sun, they are cooler but still maintain warm temperatures because they orbit close to the perimeter of the Exit Hole, which gives off a certain amount of heat. The Upper Region Planets get much colder, as they are orbiting higher than the Sun, especially when they are on the opposite side of the Exit Hole to the Sun. Kronik is the absolute coldest Planet in the Swirl system, mainly because it is not in the remnants of the Swirl, (the primary dust particles that seem to hold the Planets in orbit from the origins of the System) though when directly facing the Sun, it gets very warm during the time it spends in that position. The Daylight is longer on Kronik as it rotates very slowly, but the light fades when Kronik is opposite the Sun. This gives Kronik almost 4 Constellation Cycles of dusk and darkness. Constellation Cycles are how time is measured in the Swirl System. Twelve Constellation Cycles are the equivalent to 1 Earth year. The Constellations in the Swirl are: The Crab, The Dipper, The Scales, The Twins, Hercules, Virgo, The Fish, Aquarius, Scorpio, The Bull, The Lion and Pegasus, in that order. Each Constellation appears above the Sun for 30 days.

In these times independent space travel was not encouraged. Persons could venture out on your own, but may not be well received on other planets though the Charter states that USC member planets help each other in distress. Cowbeta and Savinia have the closest proximity to each other only 20 light years separate them. 20 light years in the age of Warp 10-plus, isn't very far only a couple of days or so. A group of Savine Scientist decided to visit Cowbeta. They wanted to discuss possible trade, the exchange of ideas and the sharing of technology. The USC charter also states that all Planet members have the right to any new or existing technology that any species may have. The initial meetings of the 2 Species were pretty intense, but eventually the 2 sides agreed to a partnership of sharing and allegiance. The planet leaders met on Cowbeta with Thaddeus Christian (the Biggman of Cowbeta), and the (Savine Overlord) Attilla signing an Allegiance agreement. It soon became obvious that many of the Cowbetans were not happy with the presence of Savine on their Planet, and most of the Cowbetans refused to go to Savinia.

All the species in the Swirl system are Humanoid. Some species have nodules or spots or stripes, and their ears may be different, but their physical make-up is human, with the same desires as humans. Cowbetan woman developed an attraction for Savine men to the point where they started co-habituating and having offspring called Savine-Encowan. At first there was quite an uproar about these unions, but Cowbetan women were very independent and chose their own way. A small Community of Savine-Cowbetan couples were allowed to settle in the Lower Hemisphere of Cowbeta. These communities grew to about 500 and co-existed relatively peacefully. One Cowbeta woman, a Scientist named Alise, was drawn to a Savine Scientist named Hakaan. They worked together trying to develop transport technology with the resources they had, and the closer they worked together, the closer they got. Alise, a top Scientist on Cowbeta had many admirers and one in particular was an airmen named Jacque Mavase."Bad Jack" for short. Jacque was quite fond of Alise and had dated her on a couple of occasions. Bad Jack was a decorated pilot for the Cowbetan Space Fleet and considered a catch for most Cowbetan women. Alises' slight of Jack when the Savine was around became obvious, and Jack soon realized that Alise was moving to the Commune with Hakaan. Jack never forgave her for dumping him for the Savine and it raged internally within him.

In the First Decan of Pegasus, a Savine Astronomer was casually searching the night sky when a flash of light could be seen in the distant sky. After careful analysis he determined it was a Comet and its' projected course was close to Savinia, but not close enough to be alarmed. A few nights later, while observing the Comet, there was a series of light flashes, one after the other. The Scientist once again analyzed the data and this time the trajectory of the comet had changed, and was very close to coming at Savinia. Immediately he contacted the top Scientist and officials to inform Attilla that the Comet could cause a crisis situation for all the Savine. Attilla contacted Mr. Christian and discussed the matter. It was agreed that in case the Savine needed to evacuate, plots of land in the lower Hemisphere of Cowbeta were available for Savine evacuees if needed. Cowbetan Scientists soon took the matter so serious that they suggested a mobile force shield should be built to try and deflect any debris in case of a collision. Mr. Christian approved the shield and work started on it immediately. As Virgo appeared above the Sun, Six CCs (Constellation Cycles) had passed when one evening another Savine Scientist noticed a series of astonishing light flashes that seemed to change the direction of the Comet again. This time, all the top Savine Scientist determined it was a rogue Zoomba Comet. The Comet had picked up speed, and was now definitely headed directly at Savinia's moon. "The Comet must have hit a very dense Asteroid field, spewed out long ago by the Exit hole", said the Chief Scientist. "Running into the Asteroid belt caused the Comet to have a pinball affect, ping ponging, picking up speed and changing the direction it previously had". Scientist on both planets now knew the Comet would collide with or come dangerously close to Savinia or its' moon. Attilla the Savine Overlord announced that all Savine must prepare for a disaster, and sent a distress message to the USC. Preparation for the Comet meant gathering as much food as you could, which for the Savine meant gathering Humalings.

Humalings, those human like creatures that the Savine love so well. Humalings look like humans in the face, but they have paws on their hands and knees, Furry bodies and move around on all fours with their back legs raised until they need them to leap. Leaping is fun for Humalings, it's like synchronized swimming, and quite amazing to watch, but Humalings are the main source of protein for the Savine. The meat Humalings provide sustain the Savine along with the fruits and Sunflower Bread that grows on Savinia. Cockball Stew and Teet Cakes are the main dishes of the Savine diet. The gathering of the Humalings meant there would be Humaling Preserves made in case of disaster, though many Savine preferred fresh Humaling.

The Cowbetans were preparing for disaster as...
