Mike and Elizabeth Barrett are living a comfortable life in Munich. Mike is with U.S. Army counterintelligence, serving as a linguist screening newly arrived immigrants from East Germany. Elizabeth takes care of their two children and serves as the president of the Munich-American Elementary School. Then it all falls apart. It is hard for Mike Barrett to see and feel the humiliation his wife, Elizabeth, feels from being accused of being a Communist sympathizer. Only a few years earlier, the House Un-American Activities Committee and McCarthyism ruined so many reputations and careers. Was it happening again to the Barrett family?
