A strategic outpost in the Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus was vital to British imperial ambitions in the East as the Ottoman Empire grew increasingly fragile in the nineteenth century. Here, Gail Dallas Hook describes the British occupation of Cyprus from 1878 to 1914, during which British government, science, and capital investment were installed alongside a new British colonial community, building 'British Cyprus' long before the island became a formal part of the British Empire. By the outbreak of World War I and the subsequent formal acquisition of the island, Cyprus was already part of Joseph Chamberlain's 'undeveloped estate' of empire.

However, as Hook shows, the uniqueness of an island populated by multiple ethnicities and religious groups, especially Muslim and Greek Orthodox, was far from typical and created difficulties unforeseen by the imperialists. Those groups had long-entrenched investments in the island, and British occupation threatened the roles that had been traditionally held between the Ottoman minority rule and the Greek Orthodox majority. This book identifies those roles and why the complexities and divisions between those groups could never be fully resolved through British 'good government'.

Protectorate Cyprus examines British efforts to bring this 'good government' to Cyprus while developing the island's resources and people for its own purposes in ways similar to development in other parts of the British Empire. Yet the significance of Protectorate Cyprus is primarily as a unique representation of Britain's 'informal empire' before World War I that has been little studied. Thus Protectorate Cyprus is a crucial addition to the history of the Britsih Empire.
