A survey of trauma and its medical and surgical management, which attempts to provide a critical review of the worldwide pandemic of trauma, its causes and early management. The mechanisms of injury and the physiological responses to trauma are discussed and retrieval and trauma scoring are re-examined. Surgical intervention is described on a regional basis. Up-to-date accounts of burns management, intensive care, anaesthesia and cardiopulmonary resuscitation following injury. Special attention is devoted to trauma in children and in pregnancy and to the surgical response to urban terrorism.
