It has been several years since publication of The Biologyand Treatment of Cancer (by Arthur D. Pardee and Gary Stein- Wiley-Blackwell). That book captured the fundamentalproperties of Cancer Biology and relevant issues associated withtreatment of the disease. For this new edition, the editors areinterested to include coverage of additional "patientcentric" topics and for a presentation of cancer biology withselection of topics, facts, and perspectives with clarity that ismaximally comprehendible without a scientific or biomedicalbackground.

Recent advances in understanding cancer have beentransformative. Significant breakthroughs in the molecular andcellular basis of cancer have provided strategies for approachingcancer prevention, early detection, treatment incorporatingclinical trials and recovery that "make a significantdifference."

The authors have been encouraged by colleagues to develop anupdated edition of The Biology and Treatment of Cancer thatincorporates the recently acquired insight into the genetic andepigenetic parameters of cancer biology and pathology withindications of emerging clinical applications.

This updated edition will present an overview of cancer withemphasis on considerations, mechanisms and options to navigate theemerging "road map" from cancer prevention to earlydetection, treatment and recovery will be a unique and valuedresource for cancer patients and caregivers. Equallyimportant, while there are authoritative and comprehensivebooks focused on the mechanistic and clinical facets of cancer, this book will be important for the academic and clinical care"markets." There is a requirement for an authoritativeoverview and perspective of the challenges and opportunitiesassociated with cancer biology, cancer research and the spectrum ofclinical considerations that are central to "experiencingcancer" as well as to studying, investigating and treatingcancer.

To accommodate the requirements for a book that provides aresource for cancer patients, cancer health care providers andcancer investigators as well as supports academic requirements forbroad coverage of cancer for undergraduate, graduate and medicalstudents, Dr. Stein has partnered with his deputy director for theVermont Cancer Center. Together, they bring experience andperspectives of a Cancer Center Director with longstandingexperience in cancer research and a Cancer CenterAdministrator/Cancer Clinical Trials Director with a background inoncology nursing and dedication to cancer patient care.

They will enlist leaders in cancer research, cancer care andclinical trials to provide accurate and balanced understanding ofcancer and the cancer patient. Each chapter will be developedto illustrate the importance of cancer prevention, early detection, treatment and survivorship. Each chapter will relate thesignificance for a seamless continuum from cancer research toclinical trials and the translation to advancing standards of carethat provide a "competitive challenge to cancer" andthe emerging transition of cancer from a life threatening to a"treatable disease."
