This book, by one of the world's leading Beethoven authorities, offers a critical review of Beethoven biography. It begins with a look at first biographical attempts made directly after the composer's death in 1827. It moves on through the long nineteenth century highlighting the work of Alexander Wheelock Thayer and the foundation of modern Beethoven biography, and on to studies informed by analytical approaches to Beethoven's music, such as the creative process, in the twentieth century. It brings the story up-to-date by including twenty-first century stabs at Beethoven biography including the author's own. In the span of nearly 200 years since Beethoven's death, many book-length interpretations of his life and work have been created by individuals having different angles of vision on the subject. As Lockwood shows, each reflects not only the individual biographer's knowledge and interests, but also his inner sense of purpose as each writer works within the intellectual framework of his time. With basic assumptions shared and (new) facts evolving over time, Lockwood claims, the biographer's role has remained highly personal. By drawing comparisons with artistic biographies in genres such as literature and art, the book concludes with offering speculations about future direction in Beethoven biography.

LEWIS H. LOCKWOOD is one of the leading authorities on Beethoven worldwide. Having taught at Princeton and Harvard, some of his key Beethoven publications include: Beethoven: The Music and the Life (Norton, 2003; translated into many languages), as well as Beethoven's Symphonies: An Artistic Vision (Norton, 2015) and with the Julliard String Quartet: Inside Beethoven's Quartets: History, Performance, Interpretation (Harvard University Press, 2008). Lockwood is known for his masterly analysis of Beethoven's sketchbooks.
