Contemporary research on the Arab image in the US press has invariably shown Arabs linked to Israel and Middle East conflict. These studies, thus, have ignored the development of the Arab image prior to 1948.
The present work content-analyzed Arab image in a major US news- paper since the beginning of modern Arab history, starting with the downfall of the Ottoman control. Beginning in 1917, every third year was represented by the New York Times coverage during the even numbered days of March, until 1948, when Israel was created.
The analysis examined conflict and cooperation as underlying themes of the Arab image (across nine major categories). The findings allowed to present a comprehensive view for the development of the Arab image in the American mind from a pre-1916 romantic image to a more realistic one at present.
