There have been measurable advances in the care of patients with peritonitis, including major strides in diagnosis, specific surgical care, anaesthetic techniques and supportive measures, including the use of antibiotics. However, there are still patients who remain unresponsive, typically those with other serious illnesses. The treatment of such challenging cases requires a reexamination of the entire theory and process of treatment of peritonitis. This book furthers such a reassessment and will be of particular benefit to those involved in the front-line care of peritonitis sufferers.
